Crane Work
We are highly skilled in all areas of engineering expertise related to shipping cranes. Past projects include the design and installation of new cranes as well as ongoing maintenance, safety reviews, repairs, relocation of of cranes.
Yards and Wharf Work
Our work experience with yards and wharfs includes many types of cargo handling facilities, including their layout, structural, mechanical and electrical designs. This includes new designs as well as testing and modification of existing structures and systems.
Equipment Work
Our work experience with equipment includes ship to shore container cranes (mobile and rail mounted), whirly cranes, rubber tired gantry cranes, straddle carriers, shuttle carriers, cantilevered rail mounted gantry cranes, top picks, reach stackers, translifters, counterbalance equipment, automated stacking cranes, warehouse cranes, fork lifts, yard vehicles, etc.
ABOUT
Laurence and Associates, LLC (LA, LLC) provides engineering design and planning services to the marine and cargo handling industry. We are experienced in designs relating to equipment, yards, wharfs, buildings, etc. We provide structural design, mechanical design, electrical design, project management, design review, and construction assistance/oversight services.
The firm was created in 2008. Since that time, LA, LLC has grown its client base and now provides professional services to about 80 different customers in the ports and harbors industry including Port Authorities, shipping companies, stevedore firms, terminal operators, crane manufacturers, and general contractors.
We have professional registration in the following US states and territories:
Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. We are capable of being licensed in any state as needed.

MEET THE ENGINEERS
William Laurence
William is the owner of Laurence & Associates. He is a Professional Engineer with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Alabama
and an MBA from Troy University. He has 22 years of experience with a focus on completing capital cost estimates, project management, design of modifications to and relocation of existing cranes and other equipment, independent analysis and review of OEM structural calculations and drawings for new equipment, condition surveys of existing equipment, design of modifications to existing facilities, design of new facilities, and on-site inspection and technical assistance during project construction phase.
Nick Farrell
Nick is a Professional Engineer with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Alabama.
Nick is skilled in project management, design of modifications to and relocation of existing cranes and other equipment, independent analysis and review of OEM structural calculations and drawings for new equipment, design of modifications to existing facilities, design of new facilities, and on-site inspection and technical
assistance during project construction phases.
Robert Otts
Robert is a Professional Engineer with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Mississippi. His 14 years of experience include structural designs in unique heavy industrial and ports and harbors. In addition, Mr. Otts has experience with assisting contractors with moving heavy equipment via self propelled modular transporters (SPMT’s) and demolition of ship-to-shore cranes. He is proficient in utilizing RISA-3D, finite element modeling (FEM) program, to assist with structural analyses of new structures as well as existing structures. He is also experienced in using Optimoor Mooring Analysis Software for optimizing a vessel’s mooring arrangement and analyzing an existing pier, or new pier, for mooring and berthing loads induced by a ship docking at a pier.
Joseph Garland
Joseph is an Engineer Intern with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of South Alabama. His project experience includes design of modifications to and relocation of existing cranes and other equipment; independent analysis and review of OEM structural, mechanical, and electrical calculations and drawings for new equipment; design of modifications to existing port and steel mill equipment; on-site inspection, testing, and technical assistance during projects.
